I believe dance is a powerful method of communication; an opportunity for connection and expression that transcend words. Dance can be for individual gratification, but true joy comes when I know I have successfully impacted the life of another. As a dancer, choreographer, and dance educator, my focus is on artistry that creates authentic connection and communication. I aspire to continuously refine my artistic voice so that I may always be impactful in creating a connection with others.
My art explores the inner world; movement produced from internal intention that is then expressed externally. I believe this method allows for an honest exchange with the viewer. I am constantly investigative and curious about the awareness of the internal body. I am inspired by full bodied movement yet I love attention to detail. From experience I have learned that this focus builds into a captivating presence that exudes internal strength and commitment. I continually challenge myself to be an artist that dances with a body, heart and mind connection; pushing for a deeper understanding of even the most basic moves. I strive for honesty in my storytelling over perfection in movement. In my art, technique is merely a support for the execution of artistry. My body is my voice; with technique I gain control and articulation of the body, allowing for eloquent communication with the audience. By instilling this physical, mental and spiritual understanding of dance, I push myself to continuously grow as a complete, mature artist.
I am currently investigating how my experiences as a professional dancer can better inform my choreography and teaching. As a dancer I have focused on defining my artistry, resulting in a specific movement quality that is captivating to the eye. I am now curious to how I can impart this quality to other dancers in choreography and teaching. More importantly, I am interested in how this approach challenges the perspective others have of what dance means. I hope that encouraging others to ask this question highlights the potential of dance as a medium for connection between all communities.
